On the website neighborsgo.com there is a real sense of interaction with the audience primarily because the material is user generated. The user is allowed to upload photos and videos, post stories and events and create blogs. Your stories are featured on the first page. They have cornered the local neighborhoods. You can check your or any local neighborhood’s history. There are yellow pages and calendar applications. The editors’ allow for interaction with them and viewers are allowed to comment and mark posts as objectionable. I like the fact that the advertising is marked because it could be very easy to confuse viewer generated content with ads. Print versions are also available. You can follow on twitter or facebook the only thing missing is youtube. The website is social journalism without contributions from viewers it would fail to exist as it is.

More Americans are online and their not their just for Facebook or surfing for porn. Obama’s campaign took advantage of this fact as way to reach out to young interactive voters as the Pew report shows. I believe the numbers in the Pew poll will influence future election campaigns because the numbers are too significant to ignore and to inexpensive to produce. Looking at several online websites, one in particular, (the link below) voters believe that the Obama “change” stops there. Americans are now in a “a wait and see” approach, but as pocketbooks still remain stretched so does the patience of Americans for Obama to do something, to change something, not just idealism but policies. The USAToday.com website does a very good job interacting with online users. Their coverage includes Gallup polls, interactive maps, photos and other polls and stats that show how a wide range of Americans are feeling about the presidency. I believe in the next elections with online resources such as these, voters will be more informed and more researched in campaign issues. As online journalist it will be our job to follow all the issues not just the hot button topics and deliver a more unbiased approach with even more interactive tools to engage the public.

bullet point approach that allows voters to make up their own mind with the most information in the least amount of time. Now that is the change that everyone can get behind.

Pet Success

For my multimedia package assignment I decided to check out Fox 4′s pet of the week. Below are a link to Fox 4 and a seperate link to the pet of the week. All though I would not call pet of the week a news worthy story it is very compelling and did i mention adorable. Fox, however cute the content did a very good job incorporating basically all the aspects of a good multiledia package. There is a slide show and a poll to vote on your favorite pet. Once you have vored it lets you know what the results are so far. There are links to other past photos, videos,related articles about animals, information about adoption and a map. They also let users add photos and post comments as well as sent articles and photos to friends. Though the material may not be a hard hitting news story the website covered all it’s bases and is very successful in engaging it’s viewers to become involved.

Chicago Beating

U.S. Officials offer old solutions to help end new teen violence.

After the video of the beating death of Derrion Albert, 16, a Fenger High School student, President Obama sent top officials to discuss solutions to end the escalating teen violence happening in American schools.

Both Attorney General, Eric Holder Jr., and U.S. secretary of education, Arne Duncan, believe a collected community effort is need in order to resolve the underlining issues.
The Holder spoke of returning to “oldtime” standards and values.
Duncan said that all adults share the responsibility. “It starts with parents but ti continues with others: teachers, coaches, mentors and friends.”
They both believe that love, understanding and teaching children self worth are the building blocks to constructing a new outlook of hope and peace for our children.

t.v. to newspaper. newspaper to radio. radio to website. Journalist must share information freely and wear different hats, embracing multi media formats. It’s a collaborative effort with the intention of contributing knowledge. Sharing being not a one stop source but a continuing source. In order to stand out you have to know your auidence, their wants and needs and find fresh angles and tools to deliver them. This forces good papers to become better, to write succint and provide multimedia tools to enhance stories. It could also allow lesser papers to become lazy and rely on other sites to provide information, but these papers will eventually fade away. The scoop is harder and harder to get with the immediacy of the web and the lack of privacy. So convergence can allow those who rely on scoops the opportunity to be first while other news sources can focus on accuracy in order to promote trust with readers. These types of media may seem polar opposites but if done right they can benefit each other. As long as there are links back to original sources and a transparency in sharing. Convergence might not always lead to the best stories or the best journalistic efforts now but with each passing day the embrace of technology will raise the bar of what we as consumers and we as journalist expect from the web.
